Mac Os X v10.4 Tiger is the 5th major release of Mac OS 10, Apple's desktop and server operating system for Macintosh computers. Tiger was released to the public on 29 April 2005 for United states$129.95 as the successor to Mac Os X Panther (version 10.3), which had been released 18 months earlier. Some of the new features included a fast searching organization called Spotlight, a new version of the Safari web browser, Dashboard, a new 'Unified' theme, and improved support for 64-flake addressing on Ability Mac G5s. Tiger shocked executives at Microsoft by offering a number of features, such every bit fast file searching and improved graphics processing, which Microsoft had spent several years struggling to add together to Windows with acceptable performance. [1]

Tiger was included with all new Macintosh computers, and was also available as an upgrade for existing Mac OS Ten users, or users of supported pre-Mac Bone X systems. The server edition, Mac Bone X Server 10.4, was also available for some Macintosh product lines. Six weeks after its official release, Apple had delivered 2 million copies of Tiger, representing 16% of all Mac OS X users. Apple claimed that Tiger was the almost successful Apple Os release in the company'south history. [2] At the World Wide Developers Briefing on June 11, 2007, Apple tree's CEO, Steve Jobs, announced that out of the 22 million Mac OS Ten users, more than 67% were using Tiger. [3]

Apple appear a transition to Intel x86 processors during Tiger'southward lifetime, making it the first released Apple operating system to work on Apple–Intel architecture machines. The Apple TV, equally released in March 2007, ships with a customized version of Mac OS Ten Tiger branded "Apple tree Goggle box OS" that replaces the usual graphical user interface with an updated version of Front end Row. [four]

Tiger was succeeded by Mac Os X v10.5 Leopard on 26 October 2007, after 30 months, making Tiger the longest running version of Mac Os X. [5] The last security update released for Tiger users was the 2009-005 update. [6] [vii] The side by side security update, 2009-006 [eight] just included back up for Leopard and Snow Leopard. The latest version of QuickTime is 7.vi.4. The final version of iTunes that can run on Tiger is 9.two.1, because 10.0 only supports Mac Bone X Leopard and later. [9] Safari 4.1.3 is the final version for Tiger every bit of xviii Nov 2010. [10] Despite non having received security updates since so, Tiger remains pop with Power Mac users and retrocomputing enthusiasts due to its broad software and hardware compatibility, every bit information technology runs on a wide variety of older machines and is the last OS X version that supports Classic Environment, a Mac Os 9 compatibility layer. [xi]

Organization requirements

Tiger was initially available in a PowerPC edition, with an Intel edition released first at 10.4.4. There is no universal version of the client operating organisation, although Tiger Server was fabricated available on a universal DVD from version 10.4.vii. While Apple shipped the PowerPC edition arranged with PowerPC-based Macs and as well sold it as a split retail box, the only way to go the Intel version was bundled with an Intel-based Mac. However, it was possible to buy the "restore" DVDs containing the Intel version through unofficial channels such as eBay, and officially through Apple if you could provide proof of purchase of the appropriate Intel Mac. These gray coloured "restore" DVDs supplied with new Macs, are designed to but restore on the model of Mac that they are intended for. The retail PPC only DVD tin can exist used on whatever PPC based Mac supported by Tiger.

The arrangement requirements of the PowerPC edition are: [12]

  • A PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor running at 300 MHz or faster
  • Built-in FireWire
  • At least 256 MB of RAM, 128 MB can run it unofficially though (512 MB or 1 GB recommended)
  • At least three GB of available hd space; 4 GB of disk space including the Xcode 2 Tools, two GB for the minimal install
  • DVD-ROM drive (CD-ROM exchange was bachelor; offer ended on March xx, 2007)

Tiger removed back up for older New Earth ROM Macs such as the original iMacs and iBooks that were supported in Panther; however it is possible to install Tiger on these Macs using third-party software (such as XPostFacto) that overrides the checks made at the beginning of the installation process. Likewise, machines such as biscuit Power Mac G3s and "Wall Street" PowerBook G3s that were dropped by Panther (the preceding release of Mac OS Ten) can too be made to run both Panther and Tiger in this way. Also, Tiger can be installed on unsupported New World ROM Macs by installing it on a supported Mac, then swapping hard drives. Old Earth ROM Macs crave the use of XPostFacto to install Tiger.

Tiger was the concluding version of Mac OS X that supported the PowerPC G3 processor.

History

Apple CEO Steve Jobs showtime presented Tiger in his keynote presentation at the Worldwide Developers Conference on 28 June 2004, ten months before its commercial release in April 2005. Four months before that official release, several non-commercial, developer'south releases of Tiger leaked onto the Internet via BitTorrent file sharers. It was first mentioned on Apple tree website on 4 May 2004. Apple sued these file sharers. [13] On 12 April 2005, Apple announced Tiger's official, worldwide release would be Apr 29. All Apple Stores around the world held Tiger seminars, presentations and demos.

On June 6, 2005 at the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, Jobs reported that nearly two million copies had been sold in Tiger'south first six weeks of release, making it the well-nigh successful operating system release in Apple'southward history. Jobs and so disclosed that Mac Bone X had been engineered from its inception to piece of work with Intel'due south x86 line of processors in addition to the PowerPC, the CPU for which the operating system had always been publicly marketed. Apple concurrently appear its intent to release the showtime x86-based computers in June 2006, and to move the rest of its computers to 1086 microprocessors past June 2007. On January 10, 2006, Apple tree presented its new iMac and MacBook Pro computers running on Intel Core Duo processors, and appear that the unabridged Apple product line would run on Intel processors by the end of 2006. Apple and then released the Mac Pro and announced the new Xserve on August 8, completing the Intel transition in 210 days, roughly 10 months ahead of the original schedule.

Tiger is the first version of Mac Bone X to be supplied on a DVD, although the DVD could originally be exchanged for CDs for $nine.95. Information technology is as well the commencement (and and so far but) version of Mac OS that would somewhen have an update version number catastrophe with a value greater than 9.

[fifteen] [xvi]
  • A new startup daemon called launchd that allows for faster boots.
  • The printing dialog in Tiger now features a drop downward menu for creating PDFs, sending PDFs to Mail, and other PDF related deportment. Interface differences

In every major new revision of Mac Bone 10, Apple alters the graphical user interface somewhat. In Tiger, the menu bar displayed at the acme of the screen now features a colored Spotlight button in the upper right corner; the menu itself has a smoother 'glassy' texture to replace the faint pinstripes in Panther.

Also of note, Tiger introduces a new window theme, often described as 'Unified'. A variation on the standard, non-brushed metal theme used since the introduction of Mac Bone X, this theme integrates the title bar and the toolbar of a window. A prominent example of an application that utilizes this theme is Post.

Tiger trademark lawsuit

Shortly before the release of Mac OS X Tiger, the computer retailer TigerDirect.com, Inc. filed a lawsuit against Apple, alleging that Apple tree infringed TigerDirect.com's trademark with the Mac OS Ten Tiger operating organisation. [eighteen]

The following is a quotation from TigerDirect.com's courtroom memorandum:

Apple Reckoner's utilise of its infringing family of Tiger marks to expand sales of products besides its operating organisation software is already evident — for example, Apple Estimator is offering complimentary iPods and laptops as office of its Tiger World Premiere giveaway. In short, notwithstanding its representation to the PTO that it would merely use Tiger in connection with their unique computer operating arrangement software, Apple Computer has in contempo weeks used a family unit of Tiger marks in connection with a substantially broader group of products and services, including the very products and services currently offered by Tiger Direct under its famous family unit of Tiger marks. [19]

The estimate in the instance ruled in Apple's favor. [20]

Support for Intel processors

At the 2005 Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced that Apple would begin selling Mac computers with Intel processors in 2006. To permit developers to begin producing software for these Intel-based Macs, Apple made Developer Transition Kits available for sale which included a version of Mac Os 10 v10.4.1 designed to run on x86 processors.

This build includes Apple's Rosetta—a translation process that allows Intel processor versions of the OS to run PPC software with piffling penalty. This is contrasted with the electric current Mac OS nine Archetype mode, which uses comparably larger amounts of organization resources.

Before long after the Developer Transition Kits began shipping, copies of Tiger x86 were leaked onto file sharing networks. Although Apple tree had implemented a Trusted Computing DRM scheme in the transition hardware and OS in an endeavor to stop people installing Tiger x86 on non-Apple PCs, the OSx86 project presently managed to remove this restriction. [21] Every bit Apple released each update with newer safeguards to preclude its utilise on not-Apple hardware, unofficially-modified versions were released that circumvented Apple's safeguards. However, with the release of ten.four.5, x.4.six, and x.iv.seven the unofficially-modified versions connected to use the kernel from the 10.4.4 because afterwards kernels have hardware locks and depend heavily on Extensible Firmware Interface. By late 2006, the 10.4.8 kernel was cracked. [22]

At MacWorld San Francisco 2006, Jobs announced the immediate availability of Mac OS X v10.iv.4, the first publicly available release of Tiger compiled for both PowerPC and Intel x86 based machines.
